URL count API
Twitter is a place where news is broken and shared at scale. Companies want to understand how often news is shared and engaged with on Twitter, but we do not have an API that truly serves this functionality. Every PR company (e.g. Cision, Meltwater) and every social listening company (Brandwatch, Talkwalker...) has asked for this functionality and has tried to find workarounds to solve it.
The API could function by submitting a URL field and returning share counts, and engagements.
To add on here, today PR software products attempt to show their clients how important news articles are shared across social platforms. Without a way to do this at scale for article urls on Twitter, the metrics displayed to end users (i.e. brands) for "shares on Twitter" often show as zero. This makes it look as though Twitter was not a significant channel for distribution of these articles, when that is not accurate. By showing zero, they're effectively telling these end users that they don't need to consider the social spread of these articles, and are therefore devaluing Twitter data.
If these PR products were able to accurately show how many times an article was shared on Twitter, then these end users would clearly see the impact Twitter is having on distribution and spread of content.
